Today we show you all the similarities between Cat and Lion, so yes cats can't roar and lions are not able to purr. But these small predators with whom we have lived for thousands of years have a lot in common with these large maned beasts representing different symbols.

Those who own a cat have already noticed strange and wild behaviors reminiscent of an ultra fierce super predator 🦁 !

A small cultural point: the big cats (lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards) are from the Pantherinae cat subfamily, to simplify it means that they separated from the rest of the cats at least six million years ago.

Here are 5 striking similarities between your little Cat and the huge Lion:

Cat and Lion

1) THEY RUB AGAINST EACH OTHER EVERYWHERE
Cats have fragrant glands on their bodies, on the sides of their faces, around their mouths, on their front legs and finally on the base of their tails. When your cat rubs against objects or you, he is actually marking his territory with pheromones.

The big cats hit them head on in the environment, the smell they deposit behind them acts as a warning signal to intruders who could cross their territory.

2) THEY SLEEP A LOT
"Is my cat sleeping too much?" is a common query in search engines by the owners of these little monsters. The answer is "probably not", indeed a cat can sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day. This is not out of laziness but as a good predator, the cat needs to genetically save energy for hunting.

Not all hunts result in a meal, cats live according to a hunting cycle. The same applies of course for big cats, a lion can easily sleep 20 hours in the shade. Moreover, if the hunt has been successful, they don't move until they've digested!

3) THEY LIKE CATNIP
The Nepeta cataria plant has a powerful effect on cats. Just give your little pet a blade of grass and many licks, sniffles, rolls will follow.

The effect of this catnip composed of the active substance nepetalactone comes from their genetics, however 30 to 40% of domestic cats are indifferent. Lions and jaguars react strongly to it, but it varies between individuals.

Here is a short video of "Big Cat Rescue" showing the effect of catnip on big cats.

4) THEY SCRATCH A LOT OF THINGS
Whatever their size, felines have retractable claws such as Wolverine, except for cheetahs, which have semi-retractable claws. The claws are used for hunting but also for climbing, the fact of being able to store their claws allows to keep the sharp aspect.

Lions who scrape a tree trunk not only use it to sharpen their claws but also to mark their territories as seen above.

5) THEY FEEL THINGS WITH THEIR MOUTH OPEN
It may seem strange at first sight but we have all seen it, our feline friends have an acute sense of smell. Their nose is composed of tens of millions of receptors (humans only have five million olfactory receptors). These felines are composed of an odour detection organ in addition to what is called a Jacobson's organ. It is located at the base of the nasal cavity in all cats but also in lizards, snakes, dogs, cattle and also pigs. This organ gives cats the opportunity to taste the odorous elements, to use them they use a movement known as the Flehmen response by opening their mouth, wrinkling their nose and interrupting their breathing. This funny face is even more noticeable in big cats, but those who live with cats can see it!
